5 HVAC Mistakes Homeowners Can Avoid

HVAC MISTAKES TO AVOID

Here are five HVAC Mistakes homeowners make and how to avoid them. Many of the decisions you make about your heating and air conditioning unit may seem harmless. Many people put off changing their air filters or close air vents indefinitely without considering the impact these actions can have on their HVAC unit. These small actions can lead to higher utility bills and reduce the lifespan of your HVAC system.

Is Your Thermostat Setting Incorrect?

If you set the temperature on the thermostat to extreme levels year-round, you will have high energy bills. You can save as much as 10 percent on your annual energy bill by setting your thermostat at eight to ten degrees less than you set it now, for at least eight hours per day. If you have a programmable thermostat this can be done automatically.

Are Your Vents Closed?

If you don’t use a room in your home, you might be closing the vents in order to save energy. However, by closing the vents you are creating negative pressure which can lead to cold air being drawn into the room through the windows and walls. This means your HVAC system will have to work harder to maintain the indoor temperature setting.

Is the Area Around the Condenser Cluttered?

The outdoor HVAC condenser unit must have proper airflow in order to dissipate the heat removed from your home. If you have weeds and shrubbery encroaching on the area around the unit, it can hinder airflow. To make your unit more efficient clear away debris and plant matter, that is within a few feet of the unit, on a regular basis.

Are Your Air Filters Dirty?

Change your air filters regularly. This is the most important maintenance step for your HVAC unit. A dirty air filter can make a system less efficient. Filters can get clogged with dirt which impedes airflow and makes your HVAC system work harder to pull air into the system. Replacing the filter can save energy and give you cleaner air.

Does  Your HVAC System Receive Regular Maintenance?

Your HVAC system needs to be maintained by a professional. Preventative maintenance can keep the system running longer and can help catch any problems before they damage the system.
